Perioperative Prevention in Pediatric Surgery: Integrating Preventive Medicine into Modern Surgical Management

Preventive medicine and surgery management are increasingly intertwined, especially as surgical volumes rise and case complexity grows globally. This article reviews how preventive medicine frameworks can be embedded across the perioperative continuum—preoperative risk stratification, intraoperative safety, and postoperative surveillance—to reduce complications, enhance outcomes, and optimize resource use. Drawing on recent evidence regarding surgical site infection (SSI) prevention, error reduction, and risk‑based prophylactic surgery, we describe key strategies such as structured preoperative assessment, antimicrobial prophylaxis, standardized checklists, and interprofessional care pathways. Particular attention is given to pediatric and high‑risk surgical contexts where the margin for error is small and long‑term sequelae are substantial. Practical recommendations are proposed to bridge classical levels of prevention (primary, secondary, tertiary) with day‑to‑day surgical decision‑making, including indications for preventive (prophylactic) procedures. The article concludes by emphasizing that prevention‑oriented surgery management should be considered a core competency for modern surgical teams, rather than an adjunct concern, and outlines priorities for implementation and research.
