Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has reshaped pediatric traumatology and orthopedics, including patterns of musculoskeletal injury, perioperative risk, and indications for limb reconstruction or replacement in young people. Evidence shows that COVID-19 and its treatments are linked to musculoskeletal sequelae such as osteonecrosis and persistent pain, which can precipitate complex limb pathology and, rarely, limb loss. This narrative, hypothesis-generating article synthesizes current literature on COVID-19-related musculoskeletal complications and orthopedic trauma, then proposes a conceptual framework for functional and psychosocial outcomes after limb prosthetic fitting in adolescents and young adults who survived COVID-19. Using a hypothetical cohort informed by reported post-COVID avascular necrosis and prosthetic outcome data, we model early and mid-term changes in mobility-specific quality of life, school participation, and mental health after prosthetic rehabilitation. We also compare key rehabilitation strategies and follow-up models relevant to this population. Although direct pediatric outcome data are scarce, extrapolation from adult post-COVID arthroplasty and general pediatric amputee literature suggests that limb prosthetics can restore high levels of function when integrated into multidisciplinary care pathways that address long COVID symptoms, cardiopulmonary fitness, and psychological well-being.
