Microbiological Determinants and Prevention of Seasonal Infectious Diseases: From Mechanisms to Public Health Practice

Abstract

Seasonal fluctuations in infectious diseases arise from complex interactions between microorganisms, hosts, and the environment, producing predictable waves of respiratory and enteric illnesses each year. This article synthesizes current microbiological and epidemiological evidence on seasonality and translates it into prevention strategies suitable for community and clinical settings. Mechanisms include environmental modulation of pathogen stability, temperature‑ and humidity‑dependent transmission dynamics, seasonal variation in host susceptibility, and behavior‑driven crowding indoors during specific seasons. Respiratory viruses such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and rhinovirus show strong associations with temperature and humidity patterns, while bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance also display winter peaks linked to antibiotic use. Vaccination, non‑pharmaceutical interventions, environmental engineering, and antimicrobial stewardship remain the core tools to mitigate seasonal surges. We compare principal prevention methods and highlight lessons from COVID‑19 non‑pharmaceutical interventions for influenza control, illustrating how masking, distancing, and ventilation can reshape epidemic curves in the short term.
