Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis: A Borderland Disease Between Dentistry and Otorhinolaryngology

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is one of the most clinically relevant intersections between dentistry and otorhinolaryngology, yet it remains frequently underdiagnosed and mismanaged. OMS accounts for a substantial proportion of unilateral maxillary sinusitis and often arises as a complication of caries, apical periodontitis, tooth extraction, endodontic therapy, dental implants, or maxillary sinus grafting The resulting sinonasal disease may present primarily to ear, nose, and throat (ENT) clinics, where the dental source is easily overlooked without systematic dental assessment and appropriate imaging This narrative review summarizes contemporary evidence on epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical and radiologic features, and multidisciplinary management of OMS, with emphasis on coordination between dentists and otorhinolaryngologists. Awareness of characteristic unilateral symptoms, radiologic patterns, and typical dental foci is critical to avoid treatment failure after isolated sinus surgery and to optimize outcomes through combined dental and endoscopic sinus interventions
